Trump’s renewed push for U.S. control of Greenland has triggered European backlash and tariff threats, while Kalshi and Polymarket traders have poured millions into contracts tracking the odds of a deal.

Donald Trump’s renewed push for U.S. control over Greenland has turned a once-ridiculed idea into one of the most active geopolitical themes on prediction markets. Contracts on Kalshi and Polymarket tied to Greenland’s future have drawn millions of dollars in trading, with short-term odds still low but longer-dated pricing moving much higher.

Tariff threat follows opposition from European countries

Trump first floated the idea of the United States buying Greenland in 2019, arguing that the island carried strategic and economic value. Danish officials rejected the proposal at the time as “absurd.” The current stance is sharper: Trump is now pressing for direct U.S. control of Greenland and presenting it as part of a broader expansionist agenda.

After several European countries pushed back, Trump posted on Truth Social on Saturday that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland should prepare for a 10% tariff on all goods shipped to the United States, starting in early February. Reports also indicate that European Union leaders may revisit the anti-coercion instrument, or ACI, in response.

Kalshi prices one Greenland control contract at 46.4%

On Kalshi, a contract asking whether the United States will take control of any part of Greenland is currently priced at 46.4%. Trading volume has passed $1.5 million. Under the market’s rules, it resolves “Yes” if any portion of Greenland comes under formal U.S. governance or jurisdiction, whether as a state, a territory, or another legal designation inside the U.S. system.

Kalshi also lists time-based contracts on whether Trump will buy at least part of Greenland. The market places the odds at 11% before May 1, 2026, rising to 26% before 2027. For the full span of Trump’s current term, ending Jan. 20, 2029, the probability reaches 43.9%. The article says trading volume across that Kalshi set is nearing $3.9 million.

Polymarket remains cautious on the near term

On Polymarket, the contract asking whether the U.S. will acquire part of Greenland in 2026 implies odds of about 25%, with volume approaching $2.82 million. The contract only resolves “Yes” if a binding legal act transfers sovereignty or grants exclusive U.S. jurisdiction, such as a treaty, enacted legislation, or use of force. Lease arrangements and basing rights do not count.

Another Polymarket market tracking whether Trump acquires Greenland before 2027 now shows 20% odds. That contract has repriced sharply over recent weeks, climbing from the mid-single digits in late December 2025 to around 20% by mid-January 2026, a gain of roughly 13 percentage points. Its trading volume is close to $16.8 million.

Markets still see a long shot, but no longer a joke

Across these contracts, traders are not pricing in an imminent Greenland takeover. Near-term probabilities remain modest. Stretch the timeline across Trump’s full presidential term, though, and some markets move close to a coin-flip range.

Tariff threats are still hanging over the dispute, and Brussels is weighing possible countermeasures. At the same time, prediction market traders keep committing capital to Greenland-linked outcomes. No deal has happened, but the topic has clearly shifted from a dismissed talking point to a live market event that participants continue to reprice.
