TSMC is accelerating construction of its second-phase 1.4-nanometer fab project at the Central Taiwan Science Park, according to a Sept. 9 confirmation from the science park administration.
The first plant, P1, has completed its steel structure. It is expected to begin trial operations in April next year and move into mass production in the second half of next year, ahead of the company’s original 2028 production schedule.
TSMC has also submitted an application to the science park administration to build two temporary office buildings at the site. Both are expected to be completed in April next year, when the first group of more than 5,400 operations staff and outsourced personnel is set to move in.
The second-phase advanced process fab project at the Central Taiwan Science Park broke ground in October last year. The plan calls for four 1.4nm fabs, and nearly 2,000 workers are currently carrying out construction around the clock. P1 is now undergoing floor slab and exterior wall work, with plant construction scheduled to finish in early next year.
P2 has already started foundation and plant construction and is due for completion in October next year. The two plants are expected to begin mass production in succession next year. P3 has obtained its construction permit, while P4 is still in the permit application stage. The two are planned with a six-month gap, with P3 expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2028 and P4 scheduled for the fourth quarter of the same year.
After P2 is completed in the second half of next year, another 1,000 operations staff will be added. Once all four new fabs in the second-phase expansion are completed and begin production, total headcount is expected to reach 9,000 to 10,000 people.
