Lifting of Export Controls
According to Reuters, the U.S. Commerce Department has formally lifted export controls on two AI models from Anthropic – Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The reversal comes less than three weeks after the initial ban on June 12. Anthropic announced it will restore access to the models starting the following day, reopening global availability.
Background of the Ban
On June 12, Anthropic was forced to take both models offline citing national security risks. On June 27, the U.S. government partially eased restrictions, allowing Mythos 5 to be exported to certain (unspecified) parties. The full removal of controls just 19 days after the initial order reflects a rapid policy shift by regulators after reassessing security concerns.
Implications
Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees, is a leader in AI safety. Its Claude model series plays a critical role in the AI ecosystem. This quick policy reversal provides short-term stability for global deployment of its models, but also raises questions about the consistency of AI export review standards. Companies operating at the intersection of AI and crypto should closely monitor such policy changes to ensure compliance.
