Major U.S. exchanges are working on plans to expand stock trading beyond traditional market hours, raising the prospect of a 24-hour trading model for U.S. equities. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq already offer premarket and after-hours sessions, but trading activity in those windows has typically been lighter than during the regular day. Bloomberg said the push comes as 24/7 crypto trading venues, stock trading platforms, and always-open prediction markets such as Polymarket and Kalshi continue to grow. Demand from investors outside the United States for continuous liquidity and the ability to trade in real time is also adding pressure on exchanges to keep extending access. Taken together, those shifts are pushing large exchange operators to look more seriously at longer trading schedules for U.S. stocks.
