Escalation: US Strikes Inside Iran
On September 2, the US-Iran conflict escalated sharply as the US military began new strikes on targets inside Iran. Multiple locations along Iran's southern coast, including a key energy hub port, were bombed. Iran's Revolutionary Guard responded by shooting down a US MQ-9 drone. Explosions were reported in Erbil, Iraq, and US bases in Jordan and Bahrain came under attack.
Trump's Warning: 'If You Retaliate, You Will Be Hit Harder'
President Trump stated on social media that the US is striking Iran and warned that if Iran retaliates, it will face even stronger blows, leaving 'nothing left.' Trump also said the deal with Iran was worthless and that Iran had been given many chances; if they make another mistake, they will be 'wiped out.'
Iran's Tough Response
Iran's Revolutionary Guard vowed to respond multiple times and strike US bases hard. Iran also threatened Bahrain and Kuwait, saying 'gifts are on the way.' Additionally, Iran stated that the current situation does not allow a return to the memorandum of understanding signed with the US. Iran also said it would not allow the US to attempt to force ships through the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz.
Strait of Hormuz Tensions
Commercial vessel traffic in the Strait of Hormuz remained light on Monday, with single-digit transits. Two supertankers were hit by shells in the strait. US Treasury Secretary Bessent said the strait will achieve 'alternative passage' within two years. The US military has diverted 84 commercial vessels, and three others have been forced to lose operational capability.
