Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a detailed blog post on December 6 titled 'Endgame,' addressing long-standing criticisms of the network's high data fees and limited scalability. The post outlines a pragmatic yet ambitious roadmap that aims to significantly increase Ethereum's throughput while preserving its core values of decentralization, security, and censorship resistance.

Centralized Production, Trustless Validation

Buterin's central thesis is that block production can be centralized without sacrificing the network’s permissionless nature, as long as block validation remains trustless and highly decentralized. “What do we get after all of this is done?” he asks. “We get a chain where block production is still centralized, but block validation is trustless and highly decentralized, and specialized anti-censorship magic prevents the block producers from censoring.” He further warns that even if all primary stakers (block producers) turn malicious, the worst outcome is that the chain stops accepting transactions until the community pools resources to run an honest node.

To achieve this, Buterin proposes a second tier of staking with low resource requirements, combined with fraud proofs or ZK-SNARKs, enabling users to cheaply verify block validity. This design reduces the trust assumption from “most nodes are honest” to “at least one node is honest,” preserving the fundamental guarantee of censorship resistance.

Rollup-Centric Roadmap and EIP-4488

The 'Endgame' post follows recent discussions among Ethereum developers about EIP-4488, a proposal that could reduce data transfer costs for rollups by five times. Buterin emphasizes that the rollup-centric roadmap is Ethereum's greatest strength: “The profound benefit of the Ethereum rollup-centric roadmap is that it means that Ethereum is open to all of the futures, and does not have to commit to an opinion about which one will necessarily win.” He also cautions researchers to carefully assess achievable levels of decentralization in block production, especially given the challenges posed by cross-domain MEV (maximal extractable value). “It may not be worth it to add complicated plumbing to make highly decentralized block production easy if cross-domain MEV (or even cross-shard MEV from one rollup taking up multiple shards) make it unsustainable regardless.”

Big Block Chains and the Path Ahead

Buterin also addresses competing “big block” blockchains, noting that there is a path for them to transform into trustless, censorship-resistant systems. “We’ll soon find out if their core developers and communities actually value censorship resistance and decentralization enough for them to do it.” He acknowledges the long timeline required: “Sharding and data availability sampling are complex technologies to implement. It will take years of refinement and audits for people to be fully comfortable storing their assets in a ZK-rollup running a full EVM. And cross-domain MEV research too is still in its infancy. But it does look increasingly clear how a realistic but bright future for scalable blockchains is likely to emerge.”

In summary, Buterin's 'Endgame' blog provides a comprehensive framework for Ethereum's evolution, balancing technical pragmatism with a steadfast commitment to decentralization and censorship resistance. The post has already sparked extensive discussion within the Ethereum community, reinforcing the shift toward a rollup-centric multi-chain ecosystem.
