Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said in a post on X that he has not predicted, and will not predict, that defensive capabilities in cybersecurity will automatically outpace offensive ones. He said he does expect cybersecurity to eventually move toward a state where defenders hold the advantage, but added that getting there will be very difficult.
Buterin argued that defenders finding bugs in released software before attackers do does not mean defense is naturally ahead. In his view, a real defensive edge would require deeper methodological changes, including formal verification and actively minimizing the trusted computing base, or TCB. He said that work is still in its early stages.
He added that this is one of the key reasons he continues to support slowing down or pausing related technological development. Buterin also said that more than 1% of GDP should be allocated to cybersecurity, biosecurity, and physical-world safety protections.
