Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said in a post on X that Ethereum nodes can now complete synchronization in half a day, and that disk usage can be kept below 0.5TB under a more aggressive configuration. He said the improvement in node usability has come from EIP-4444 and continued optimization of Snap Sync by client teams, with the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade expected to improve sync efficiency further. Buterin also pointed to practical limits around using local infrastructure. Users can direct a wallet RPC to a local node, he said, but only if the node’s RPC functions are configured properly. Even then, some browser-based dApps may not work well with a local RPC, while other applications hardcode RPC connections to their own servers. On his own workflow, Buterin said he has become more inclined to avoid browser dApps and use command-line tools instead. He added that he has already updated ENS records through a Python script connected to a local node. He also said kohaku-cli is set to integrate privacy protocols further, and that early development work is already underway.

Node sync time and storage requirements

Buterin said EIP-4444, along with continued Snap Sync optimization by client teams, has significantly improved the experience of running a node. He added that the Glamsterdam upgrade will improve sync efficiency further.

Local RPC setup still has limits

He said users can point a wallet RPC to a local node, provided the node’s RPC functions are configured correctly. At the same time, some browser dApps may not be able to use a local RPC effectively, while other applications hardcode RPC endpoints to their own servers.

Buterin’s own workflow

Buterin said he is increasingly inclined to avoid browser dApps and use command-line tools instead. He added that he has already updated ENS records through a Python script connected to a local node.

As a next step, he said kohaku-cli will integrate privacy protocols further, and that related early-stage development is already underway.
