Vitalik Buterin said the zkEVM "speed race" has been decisively won and that the top priority should now shift fully to security. In a post on X, he congratulated the zkSync airbender team for reaching a milestone and used the moment to argue that faster proving performance is no longer the main issue. Buterin said the next phase should center on formal verification in three areas. The first is equivalence between arithmetization and the Ethereum specification. The second is a strict maximum upper bound on the ratio between verification cost and the amount of gas in a block. The third is the security of the proving system itself. The comments were reported by PANews on Oct. 15. The report framed the post as a market information update and did not include additional remarks beyond Buterin’s stated priorities.

PANews reported on Oct. 15 that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the zkEVM "speed race" has been fully won and that the main priority should now shift entirely to security.

Three items Buterin said need formal verification

In a post on X, Buterin congratulated the zkSync airbender team for reaching a milestone. He said this means three things need formal verification: the equivalence of arithmetization with the Ethereum specification, a strict maximum upper bound on the ratio between verification cost and the amount of gas in a block, and the security of the proving system itself.
