X Money has moved into a limited external beta, drawing fresh attention to whether Elon Musk will add crypto to the platform. The current rollout, based on the details disclosed so far, is centered on fiat payments rather than digital assets. Early features include peer-to-peer transfers, a debit card, and cash deposits.
William Shatner reveals early beta details
Actor William Shatner said he is involved in the beta and referred to the “42nd X Money opportunity” in a post. With permission from X, he has also been auctioning invitations to the service for charity. His posts pointed to several product details: up to 6% APY on cash deposits, a $25 welcome gift for new beta users, and an all-black X debit card that offers cashback on eligible purchases.
Those disclosures gave the public a clearer look at the first version of the product. The focus is narrow for now, and it starts with payments.
Musk ties X Money to the broader financial-services push
Musk amplified the launch by reposting screenshots of the interface and the new debit card. He also shared a Teslaconomics post about X Money that said, “This will be big.” Musk has described X Money as the “central source of all monetary transactions,” with the goal of removing the need for traditional bank accounts.
The project also links back to Musk’s earlier X.com venture, the online bank he founded in 1999 that later became part of PayPal. On the licensing side, X already holds money transmitter licenses in more than 40 U.S. states and is registered with FinCEN.
Crypto remains a future question, not a launch feature
Even with ongoing speculation about support for assets such as Dogecoin, reports indicate that the present beta is focused on fiat peer-to-peer transfers and Visa-partnered payments. That keeps the first rollout firmly inside the conventional payments stack.
At the same time, the mention of “Smart Cashtags,” described as a tool for smoother in-app trading, has kept attention on what could come after the initial launch. According to the report, X Money is still in closed internal testing, with a broader but still limited external beta expected to expand in March and April 2026.
