X has started a phased rollout of a fully AI-powered advertising platform, a key move by Elon Musk to win back brands that reduced spending on the platform in recent years. The company said the rebuilt system is designed to improve campaign performance through sharper targeting and more automated ad management.
The overhaul is tied closely to X's integration with xAI. After the two companies merged last year, rebuilding the platform's advertising infrastructure became a central priority. X said the new system includes more modern retrieval and ranking systems, with AI used to improve ad relevance and support precise audience targeting so marketers can manage and optimize campaigns more efficiently.
X rebuilds its ad stack with xAI integration
According to the company, the product is being introduced in stages rather than all at once. Monique Pintarelli, xAI's global head of advertising, said in a post on X that very few companies would attempt to rebuild an entire advertising platform in such a short period of time. She described the effort as consistent with the way X and xAI operate: fast, bold, and focused on making the product better for advertisers. She also said more updates and features are expected to follow.
For X, this is more than a routine product refresh. Advertising revenue came under pressure in the early period after Musk's takeover, pushing the company to lean more on subscriptions and AI-related business lines. Now the ad rebuild is moving into deployment. That matters, because advertising remains one of the platform's most important revenue streams.
eMarketer projects ad revenue of $2.46 billion in 2026
Research firm eMarketer said X's advertising business has started to recover. Its forecast shows total ad revenue rising from $2.26 billion in 2025 to $2.46 billion in 2026. Even so, that figure is still only about half of Twitter's 2021 peak, when advertising revenue topped $4 billion, which shows how far the company remains from its earlier scale.
The shift comes as AI becomes a major force in digital advertising across the broader tech sector. The report noted that companies such as Google and Meta are benefiting from an AI-driven ad boom, with automated systems handling tasks from ad creation to targeting and performance measurement. Those tools have lowered barriers for smaller businesses and improved return on ad spending. X is now entering the same race with a rebuilt ad platform, and the market will be watching whether the company can recover a larger share of advertiser budgets.
