X is discussing whether to pay content creators in stablecoins, including Circle’s USDC, according to a CoinDesk report that cited a person familiar with the matter. The talks surfaced in the same month the company rewrote its creator compensation system. X stopped taking new applications for its Creator Revenue Sharing program on Aug. 7, plans to retire that program on Sept. 7, and expects to make a final payout on or around Sept. 11. Existing members will be able to apply for the Original Content Rewards Program starting Sept. 8. Under the new structure, creators will be paid based on qualified impressions, defined by X as unique views from Premium users on the Home Timeline where at least half of a post is visible. Payouts are scheduled every two weeks with a $30 minimum. To qualify, creators must subscribe to X Premium, maintain at least 500 verified followers, and record 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users over a 90-day period. The report also notes why stablecoins are under consideration: creator payouts are often small, frequent, and spread across many countries, while stablecoins, in a $310 billion market, can settle within minutes and reach recipients without a U.S. bank account.

X is in talks to pay content creators in stablecoins, including Circle’s USDC, CoinDesk reported Thursday, citing a person familiar with the matter. The same person also works with other social platforms that are testing stablecoin payouts for creators.

The discussions surfaced in the same month X changed the way it pays creators. The company stopped accepting new enrollments in Creator Revenue Sharing on Aug. 7 and plans to retire that program on Sept. 7. A final payout is expected on or around Sept. 11. Existing members can begin applying to the Original Content Rewards Program on Sept. 8.

X shifts its creator rewards model

In its creator documentation, X says the new program is built to reward creators who produce original, high-quality content that reflects 「your own voice, expertise, or creativity」.

How the new payouts are calculated

The new program will pay based on qualified impressions. X defines those as unique views from Premium users on the Home Timeline where at least half of a post is visible.

Payouts are scheduled every two weeks, with a $30 minimum. To qualify, creators must hold an X Premium subscription, keep at least 500 verified followers, and reach 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users over 90 days.

Why stablecoins are being considered

The report says creator payments are often small, frequent, and owed across dozens of countries, a structure that card networks and correspondent banks handle poorly. Stablecoins are a $310 billion market. They can settle in minutes and reach a creator who does not hold a U.S. bank account.

X Money is live without a crypto component

X Money launched this year for U.S. Premium subscribers with a Visa debit card, peer-to-peer transfers, and bill pay. It did not include any crypto feature at launch.

Still, stablecoins are not entirely absent from Musk’s business orbit. Chamath Palihapitiya has said that SpaceX collects Starlink payments in stablecoins in emerging markets.
