Yahoo! Finance (YF), one of the most widely used financial information platforms, has quietly rolled out the ability to buy and sell Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Litecoin (LTC) on its iOS mobile app. The move has ignited a wave of enthusiasm among cryptocurrency advocates, who view it as a crucial validation of digital assets by a legacy financial giant.
‘The Virus Is Spreading’
Anthony Pompliano, co-founder and partner at Morgan Creek Digital, was among the first to highlight the integration. “You can now buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin on Yahoo Finance,” he tweeted, later adding, “The virus is spreading.” Pompliano and many others see YF's embrace of crypto as a sign that mainstream adoption is accelerating, even as the market endures a prolonged bear cycle.
Yahoo! Finance’s Crypto Journey
Yahoo! Finance, a subsidiary of Verizon’s Oath Inc., has been a staple of online financial information for over two decades. Its parent company had previously hinted at crypto ambitions: in early 2018, Yahoo Japan announced plans to acquire Bitarg Exchange Tokyo and launch its own exchange by spring 2019. The current rollout on the mobile app represents the first direct crypto trading capability offered by Yahoo Finance itself, albeit limited to iOS devices at launch.
Why Litecoin Over Other Coins?
While YF already tracks dozens of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Ripple (XRP), only three are tradable. Notably, Litecoin (market rank below Ripple and Bitcoin Cash) was chosen over higher-cap coins. The selection may reflect technical stability, lower transaction fees, or regulatory considerations. YF's crypto pricing data is sourced from CryptoCompare, a well-known market data aggregator.
Impact on a Bear Market
The integration comes at a time when the crypto market has lost significant value from its peaks. For many, YF’s move is a bullish signal—bringing crypto trading to millions of traditional investors who already use the platform for stock research. However, critics caution that the feature is limited to mobile and does not support fiat deposits directly; users must transfer crypto from external wallets. Nonetheless, the symbolism is powerful: a mainstream finance app now treats Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin on par with traditional assets.
Looking Ahead
Yahoo! Finance's entry into crypto trading could pressure other legacy platforms like Bloomberg or CNBC to follow suit. The company has not announced plans to expand the feature to Android or desktop, nor revealed whether additional coins will be added. As regulatory frameworks evolve, YF's cautious approach—starting with just three assets—may be a template for other incumbents. For now, the crypto community is celebrating another bridge between the old and new financial worlds.
