Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox said on X that the privacy-focused crypto network recently distributed more than $8 million in retroactive grants. According to his post, the package included several million dollars awarded to contributors who volunteered to protect users during this year’s AI vulnerability crisis. Wilcox said the payout reflects Zcash’s model of sustainable operations through self-funding and self-governance, which he described as capture-resistant. He added that Zcash plans to run similar grant rounds multiple times a year once the underlying mechanism is refined further. Wilcox also said the current self-funding and governance upgrade requires the involvement of multiple organizations, including Valar, ZODL and Vizor, as well as token holders who vote anonymously using roughly $3 billion in ZEC and the nonprofit Financial Privacy Foundation.

He added that Zcash plans to carry out similar grant distributions multiple times each year after the mechanism is improved further.
Wilcox also said the latest self-funding and governance upgrade requires participation from several organizations, including Valar, ZODL and Vizor, along with token holders casting anonymous votes with about $3 billion worth of ZEC and the nonprofit Financial Privacy Foundation.
