SemiAnalysis says reciprocating engines may become a main behind-the-meter power option for AI data centers

SemiAnalysis, an independent semiconductor and AI research firm, said rapid growth in AI computing demand is changing how data centers secure electricity. In its view, reciprocating engines, once used mainly as backup power during grid outages, are being repositioned as round-the-clock baseload systems for behind-the-meter deployments. The firm said reciprocating engine manufacturers have already signed contracts for about 1GW of behind-the-meter power projects this year. It expects annual new supply to exceed 4GW in both 2027 and 2028. Based on its modeling of U.S. grid capacity, SemiAnalysis said existing power headroom is likely to be exhausted between 2027 and 2028, while planned utility-scale generation additions through 2030 still fall short of covering the extra load expected from data centers. SemiAnalysis also estimated that roughly 140GW of potential data center projects have not yet secured power supply agreements. Those projects may increasingly turn to behind-the-meter power to get around grid expansion bottlenecks. Among reciprocating engines, aeroderivative gas turbines, and fuel cells, the firm expects reciprocating engines to take the largest share, citing lower cost, fast deployment, modular scaling, and stronger financing support, alongside capacity expansion by Caterpillar, INNIO, and Cummins.

Tom Lee says ETH beat DRAM by 72 percentage points over the past month

Bitmine Chairman and Fundstrat co-founder Tom Lee said relative performance in what he calls "AI downstream" assets continues to strengthen, with Ethereum standing out against the DRAM segment. According to data cited by Lee, ETH’s performance advantage over DRAM widened to 7,200 basis points, or 72 percentage points, over the past month. During the same period, ETH rose about 24%, while a DRAM-related ETF fell about 38%. Lee said the shift reflects how AI infrastructure spending is moving beyond chips and compute supply chains toward the application layer and digital infrastructure. In that context, some downstream AI-linked assets are being repriced by the market. A long-time Ethereum bull, Lee has repeatedly argued that the network could become a core piece of digital economic infrastructure in the AI era as stablecoins, tokenized assets, and on-chain financial applications expand. The latest comparison, he said, points to a widening performance gap between crypto assets and the traditional AI hardware supply chain.

ChangXin IPO draws 9.43 million retail investors as online allotment rate reaches 0.4714%

ChangXin Technology has released the results of its IPO subscription and allocation, showing unusually strong demand from both retail and institutional investors. According to the company’s July 20 announcement, about 9.4288 million retail investors took part in the online offering, while 285 institutional investors managing 10,907 accounts joined the offline bookbuilding process. The final online allotment rate came in at about 0.4714%, while the offline allocation ratio was about 0.1756%. After the greenshoe option and the clawback mechanism were applied, the final offline issuance stood at 2.173 billion shares, while the online issuance expanded sharply from 669 million shares to 3.851 billion shares. The article says this was the largest online issuance among 2026 IPOs and a record for STAR Market listings. The report also highlights the biggest institutional winners. Taikang Asset Management received the largest offline allocation. Among mutual funds, E Fund, China Southern Fund and ICBC Credit Suisse ranked first, second and third by allocated shares. Liang Wenfeng, through Ningbo High-Flyer Quant and Zhejiang Jiuzhang Asset, received a combined allocation worth about RMB 175 million, the largest among private funds. The article also notes a range of valuation scenarios from brokerages and market estimates ahead of the company’s expected July 27 listing.

Aztec rolls out v5 execution layer alpha with client-side ZK proving focus

Ethereum privacy infrastructure project Aztec has released the full alpha version of its v5 Execution Layer, introducing a set of cryptographic optimizations aimed at making client-side zero-knowledge proving fast enough for everyday devices. According to the update cited by The Block, the goal is to enable proof generation in seconds on smartphones and consumer-grade laptops rather than relying on specialized hardware or remote infrastructure. Aztec said the new execution layer streamlines the proving pipeline and cuts the computational load required for local proof generation. That change is designed to let users complete proofs for private transactions without depending on large servers. The project said the release could help move zero-knowledge technology closer to broader consumer use by reducing hardware barriers at the client level.
