Galaxy Digital launches Bitcoin quantum readiness plan
Galaxy Digital has formally rolled out a “Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Project,” according to Decrypt, putting structure around a growing concern in crypto: the point at which quantum computers could threaten Bitcoin’s current cryptography. The initiative has three parts: research grants of up to $5 million for post-quantum cryptography work, dedicated reports from Galaxy Research, and a quantum advisory council made up of scholars from several top universities. The effort is aimed at the so-called “Q-Day,” the threshold moment when a quantum computer could use Shor’s algorithm to break Bitcoin’s elliptic curve cryptography, forge signatures, and steal assets from wallets. Project Eleven has projected that a quantum computer capable of posing a cryptographic threat could emerge as early as 2030, potentially leaving about 6.9 million BTC exposed. Separately, Coinbase’s quantum advisory council has urged developers to begin migration work immediately. Trump has also signed an executive order setting Dec. 2031 as the deadline for the U.S. federal government to complete its transition to post-quantum cryptography.
