Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says coding jobs may vanish first as AI advances, while human judgment keeps its edge

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in a wide-ranging interview that pure coding work is likely to be among the first jobs fully replaced by AI models over the next decade, even as broader software engineering remains more durable. He drew a sharp line between writing code and designing systems, arguing that AI can handle most execution while humans retain the small but decisive share tied to judgment, taste, and direction-setting. In his framing, AI may do 95% of the work, while the human-held 5% could multiply productivity by 20 times. Amodei also argued that society is still underestimating the speed of AI progress. He linked that view to scaling laws, saying that when data, compute, and model size are combined in the right proportions, intelligence emerges and keeps improving as those inputs grow. For career planning, he pointed to three areas that may hold up better: deeply human-centered roles, work rooted in the physical world such as semiconductors and advanced manufacturing, and the ability to think critically in an environment flooded with synthetic media. Outside AI, he said biotechnology is the sector he would back, highlighting peptide therapies and cell-based treatments such as CAR-T. He also warned founders against building thin wrapper products on top of major AI APIs, and said prompt writing should be practiced like learning piano rather than treated as a shortcut.
