Japanese firm launches “human refrigerator” for heat relief in outdoor and industrial settings
Japanese tool and machinery company Trusco Nakayama Corp. has introduced the “Do Hiemon Box,” a body-cooling unit priced at about 1.5 million yen, or roughly $9,500, for use in places where air conditioning is unavailable. The stainless steel unit stays at 15°C and blows 5°C air to cool users quickly, with the stated goal of preventing heatstroke and other heat-related illness. The product has sold about 200 units so far, according to the report, with deployments at steel plants, construction sites, golf courses, universities, leisure facilities, and disaster shelters. After an earthquake in Kumamoto last week, the company also sent multiple units to evacuation shelters. ABMedia said the product reflects rising demand for specialized cooling equipment as summer temperatures in Japan repeatedly top 35°C and workplace heat-safety rules tighten. Trusco, which has a market value of about $1 billion and around 3,300 employees, also said it has received inquiries from overseas markets including Germany and the United States, pointing to possible cross-border demand for climate adaptation products.
