MoonPay has launched PayBox, a payment vault that connects to Claude and ChatGPT and lets AI agents complete transactions after user approval. The system stores crypto wallets and payment cards in a secure vault, lines up transactions inside the chat flow, and uses a passkey on the user’s device to authorize payment. At launch, PayBox supports restaurant reservations, flight bookings, shopping across major online retailers, token swaps, cross-chain fund transfers, and routing assets into DeFi protocols such as Aave. It starts with support for Solana and seven Ethereum-compatible chains: Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, and Polygon. MoonPay also said PayBox works with x402, the open payments protocol developed by Coinbase and later donated to the Linux Foundation, now supported by Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, AWS, and Anthropic. The infrastructure comes from Sodot, the Israeli key management startup MoonPay acquired in April for roughly $100 million in an all-stock deal. According to MoonPay, wallet keys are split with MPC and stored across TEEs so no single party, including MoonPay or the AI agent, can access a full key or sign on its own.

The setup is simple. PayBox stores crypto wallets and payment cards in a secure digital vault. A user tells the chatbot what they want, the AI prepares the transaction, and the user approves it with a passkey stored on their phone or device. Once approved, the funds move.

PayBox is meant to close the last step in AI commerce

In a statement, MoonPay CEO Ivan Soto-Wright said, “The card hid the cash. The phone hid the card. This is the era where money disappears into conversation. Billions of AI agents are coming online, and every one of them will need to hold, move, and spend money safely.”

Before this, Claude and ChatGPT could research investments, compare flight prices, and plan purchases, but they could not actually complete those transactions. Users still had to open a browser, log into a payment service, and finish the payment themselves. PayBox is aimed at removing that gap.

At launch, the first integrations include restaurant reservations, flight bookings, and shopping across major online retailers. Users can also swap tokens, bridge funds between blockchains, and route money into DeFi protocols such as Aave.

Launch support includes Solana and seven Ethereum-compatible chains

PayBox starts with support for Solana and seven Ethereum-compatible networks: Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, and Polygon.

MoonPay also said the product works with x402, an open payments protocol developed by Coinbase and later donated to the Linux Foundation. The protocol is now backed by Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, AWS, and Anthropic, and is designed to let AI agents pay any service that accepts agent-initiated transactions.

MoonPay has been building toward this through 2026

PayBox did not arrive in isolation. According to the report, MoonPay has spent most of 2026 laying the groundwork.

In March, the company released an open wallet standard for AI agents backed by PayPal, the Ethereum Foundation, and the Solana Foundation. In May, it launched an app that let users buy crypto inside ChatGPT, though that version still redirected users to a checkout page to finish the purchase. In June, MoonPay released a desktop app connecting Claude and Codex directly to crypto wallets.

Underlying infrastructure came from Sodot

The infrastructure behind PayBox comes from Sodot, an Israeli key management startup that MoonPay acquired in April for roughly $100 million in an all-stock deal.

Sodot’s technology already secures more than $50 billion in assets and over 10 million wallets for clients including eToro and BitGo.

Keys are split with MPC and stored in TEEs

Wallet keys are split using MPC, or multi-party computation. In this model, a private key is broken into separate fragments held by different parties, which means no single party can access funds on its own.

Those fragments are then stored in TEEs, or trusted execution environments, which MoonPay described as isolated hardware zones that protect sensitive data even from the server running the software.

In its launch announcement, the company said, “wallet keys are split via MPC across hardware-isolated enclaves, so no device, session, or party, not MoonPay, not the AI agent, ever holds a complete key or can sign alone.”

Card payments run through Visa’s agentic commerce protocol

For card payments, transactions are routed through Visa’s agentic commerce protocol. MoonPay said that allows the AI to process a payment without ever seeing the user’s actual card number, reducing the risk that credentials leak and are reused.

MoonPay says PayBox addresses a long-standing tradeoff

MoonPay framed the product as a response to what it called a structural problem in existing tools. “Existing products force a tradeoff between convenience and control: to let an agent transact autonomously, the user typically has to authorize it to take custody of funds outright, trusting a single party, the platform, the agent, or a hosted wallet, to hold and move that money safely,” the company said.

It added, “PayBox is built so no party, including MoonPay and the AI itself, can unilaterally access the user’s funds or credentials.”
