Making 21 Million Bitcoin Visible: How One Oil Painting Turns Scarcity into Form

Bitcoin’s fixed supply of 21 million coins is one of the most important design choices in monetary history, yet for most people it remains abstract. “The Whole Entire Universe,” a major work by artist Anik Malcolm, attempts to make that number physically and emotionally legible. First conceived in early 2025, the project has evolved through drawings in Lugano, digital renderings, and now a large-format oil painting set to debut at Bitcoin 2026 at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas. The concept began with a simple question: how do you show 21 million of something? Malcolm and his wife Una, an artist and jeweler, arrived at the image of a cube made of beads. From there, the mathematics became unexpectedly profound. Rounding the cube root of 21 million up to 276 produces 21,024,576. The surplus, 24,576, divides evenly across the six faces of a cube, yielding 4,096 per side. Since the square root of 4,096 is 64, each face can lose a 64×64 square—and those squares can be halved repeatedly to 32, 16, 8, 4, and 2, echoing Bitcoin’s halving mechanism with striking precision. Malcolm spent more than 900 hours creating the oil painting. Although the final image is a two-dimensional representation of a theoretical three-dimensional object, it still required the hand-painting of 227,701 visible beads, each rendered with body, highlight, and shadow. He describes the process as meditative and transformative. The work has also attracted the attention of Adam Back and may eventually become a monumental public sculpture in Roatán. More than an illustration of Bitcoin, Malcolm sees it as a still life of Bitcoin itself: literal, mathematical, symbolic, and deeply calm.
