IC designers weigh a second round of price hikes in early 2027 as foundry costs climb

IC designers are preparing for another round of price increases as wafer foundry and backend manufacturing costs continue to rise, according to ABMedia, citing Economic Daily News. Suppliers of power management ICs, display driver ICs, and microcontrollers are reportedly assessing price adjustments ranging from 5% to the double-digit percentage range, with timing centered on late 2026 to early 2027. The report ties that move to broader pricing pressure across the semiconductor supply chain. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is said to be planning price increases from January 2027, with mature-node hikes estimated at 3% to 10%. South Korean outlet Digital Daily also reported that TSMC had decided to raise 2 nm wafer prices by another 6% to 8% in the first quarter of 2027, citing higher manufacturing costs and surging electricity expenses. Earlier customer feedback had pointed to increases of 10% to as much as 20%. TrendForce had also reported that 12-inch wafer prices were heading higher in 2027, with long-term contract pricing reportedly up by 15% to more than 40% as AI demand tightened supply. At the same time, IC design companies said recent order growth should not be read as a broad recovery in end demand. Some customers have started placing orders early, driven by concerns over conflict in the Middle East and by AI demand crowding out capacity. Suppliers are now comparing order volumes with the same period last year to gauge the risk of over-ordering and to avoid another build-up in inventories.

Progate Group rallies for a third straight limit-up as advanced-node design push lifts earnings

Progate Group Corp. (8227) has emerged as a key service provider for smaller IC design houses seeking access to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. capacity, as AI-driven demand keeps advanced-node supply tight. While major cloud service providers have turned to large ASIC firms such as Alchip and GUC to secure production slots, Progate is being positioned as a turnkey bridge for companies that lack the scale or budget to work directly with TSMC. According to the source report, Progate has more than 30 years of ties with TSMC and was the first strategic partner in TSMC’s early DCA, or Design Center Alliance. The company now provides end-to-end services covering chip design, wafer tape-out at TSMC, and backend packaging and testing. Recent investor presentation materials show Progate expanding from mature offerings into advanced nodes including 6nm, 5nm, 4nm and 3nm, while also extending into TSMC’s CoWoS packaging and related cooperation with Vanguard International Semiconductor. Financially, the company reported 2025 revenue of NT$1.35 billion, up 97.8% year over year, and second-quarter 2026 revenue of about NT$613 million. Q2 2026 EPS reached NT$2.59, up 304% from the previous quarter and above full-year 2025 EPS of NT$2.06. The stock has now hit limit-up for three straight sessions.

TSMC’s planned mature-node price hike may start in January, while IC designers seek more capacity

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is planning to raise foundry prices for mature process nodes starting in January next year, according to a report by Taiwan Economic Daily cited by Odaily. The report said the planned increase would come after price hikes on advanced process nodes. Even with higher mature-node pricing on the table, IC design companies still intend to negotiate for more foundry capacity for next year than they secured this year. Industry sources said they need additional support to keep expanding their operating scale. The report also said production costs for IC makers had already risen in the first half of this year after packaging and testing houses, along with foundries other than TSMC, lifted quotes for mature-node services. In response, companies had already discussed product price increases with clients. If TSMC goes ahead with the mature-node increase next year, IC design firms are expected to reopen pricing talks with customers. The report added that customers would then try to pass the higher costs further down the chain, creating a ripple effect across the supply chain.
