Binance Research says Gen Z traders are using crypto exchanges to build older-style stock positions

A Binance Research report dated Aug. 12 found that Gen Z users on the exchange are behaving less like stereotype-driven risk takers and more like conservative allocators when they trade direct stocks, tokenized bStocks, and traditional finance perpetual contracts. Among working-age cohorts, Gen Z posted the lowest turnover across those three product lines. Their stock activity also leaned more heavily toward exchange-traded funds, with ETFs accounting for 25% of Gen Z direct stock trading volume in early August, up from 14.6% in June and well above the 9.5% recorded for millennials over the same period. The report showed that this preference was not just about trading volume. In June, unleveraged ETFs made up 18.5% of Gen Z net stock inflows, rising to 21.9% in July, while the share going into individual stocks fell from 77% to 74.2%. Even as Gen Z cut overall stock net investment by 17.4% in July, inflows into unleveraged ETFs slipped only 2%, compared with a 20.4% drop for individual stocks and a 28.5% decline for leveraged products. Binance data also showed Gen Z was the only cohort to post growth in the number of ETF holders in July, rising 2.9%. The same report found that Gen Z used perpetuals and leveraged products less aggressively than older users, while keeping more long-term capital in stocks and ETFs. Binance linked part of that behavior to its user base in emerging markets, where access to U.S. equities through local brokers can be limited.

Binance Research says Gen Z traders on crypto exchanges are leaning toward ETFs and away from leverage

Binance Research data cited in a CryptoSlate analysis points to an unexpected pattern among Gen Z users on crypto exchanges: their behavior in exchange-based stock and traditional finance products looks more conservative than many market stereotypes suggest. In early August, ETFs accounted for 25% of Gen Z direct stock trading volume, up from 14.6% in June and well above the 9.5% recorded for millennials. Net flow data showed a similar tilt, with unleveraged ETFs taking a larger share of Gen Z stock inflows while single-stock and leveraged product inflows weakened. The report also found that roughly 76% of Gen Z bStocks accounts were net accumulators, the highest share among all generations, while 77% of Gen Z direct stock accounts continued adding to positions. In traditional finance perpetuals, Gen Z averaged 13 trades per month, below millennials, Gen X, and baby boomers. By early August, leveraged and inverse ETFs made up just 2.65% of Gen Z net inflows in direct stocks. Binance said more than 90% of users of these traditional finance products came from emerging markets, where access to U.S. equities through local brokers can be difficult, helping explain why a crypto exchange may also function as a practical brokerage gateway.
