GnosisDAO approves Gnosis Chain shift to Ethereum Economic Zone rollup

GnosisDAO has approved a plan to move Gnosis Chain from a standalone layer-1 network to a ZK-proven Ethereum Economic Zone, or EEZ, rollup. The proposal, known as GIP-153, passed with 123,158 GNO in favor, 115 against and 151 abstaining across 54 voters, with total turnout reaching 123,425 GNO and clearing the 75,000 GNO quorum. Under the plan, Gnosis Chain would retire its own validator set and settle directly to Ethereum, effectively becoming a layer-2 network that relies on Ethereum validators for settlement. The first launch is targeted for late 2026 or early 2027, assuming the required EEZ technology is ready. Gnosis and ZisK developed the EEZ framework with funding from the Ethereum Foundation. The design aims to let smart contracts across participating rollups execute synchronously without bridges, while Gnosis Chain would keep its existing apps, balances and xDAI gas token. Standard Chartered’s Geoffrey Kendrick said the framework could reduce reliance on bridges and improve asset usability across EVM chains.

Vitalik Says Ethereum’s Roadmap Is Shifting Toward Quantum Security and Native Privacy

Vitalik Buterin said he compared Ethereum’s 2023 roadmap with the current Strawmap and found that the broad direction still overlaps to a large extent, even though several priorities and technical paths have changed. He said the updated plan gives greater weight to quantum security, while placing less emphasis on VDFs and some EVM upgrades. Older designs are also being replaced by approaches such as unified binary trees, PBT, and new state types. Buterin said the most visible change in the current Strawmap is the addition of topics that were not included in the 2023 roadmap. Those new focus areas include stronger native privacy support, aggressive scaling in a post-quantum setting, simpler specifications for formal verification, Blob and Gas futures, native Rollups, and a more open design space around the future form of the EVM. He added that Ethereum’s scaling approach is moving away from trying to scale all activity at once and toward building specialized mechanisms for specific high-load use cases. He also described STARK proofs and AI-accelerated formal verification as important foundations for the protocol’s future.

Ethereum Accused of Losing to Itself as Rollup Roadmap Falters and Paradigm Turns to L1

A widely discussed commentary argues Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap failed to deliver, exposing internal conflict, weak incentives, and developer departures, while even long-time backers such as Paradigm are now linked to Layer 1 efforts.

Optimistic vs. ZK Rollups: How Ethereum’s Top Layer 2 Models Differ

Ethereum’s shift to Layer 2 has pushed optimistic rollups and ZK rollups to the front. Both cut costs and raise throughput, but they differ in security checks, withdrawal speed, EVM compatibility, and ecosystem maturity.

Ethereum Unveils EEZ Plan to Reduce Layer-2 Fragmentation

The Ethereum Economic Zone, introduced at EthCC, aims to make layer-2 networks work like one environment with bridge-free interactions, shared liquidity, and synchronous contract execution across rollups.

Ethereum Layer 2s Are Not All Fading, but General-Purpose Chains Are Running Out of Reasons to Exist

Zero Network’s shutdown has revived debate over whether Ethereum has too many layer 2s. Industry voices argue the real shakeout is hitting general-purpose L2s, as liquidity and usage keep concentrating on a small group of dominant networks.

Ethereum’s L1-L2 Recalibration Points to a Shared-Security, Multi-Execution Endgame

Ethereum’s scaling debate is moving past the old split between a secure-but-expensive Layer 1 and cheap execution on Layer 2. In an analysis published by imToken and carried by Foresight, the argument is that Ethereum is not abandoning L2s, but redefining what they are for as the main chain expands its own capacity through higher gas limits, statelessness work, wider data availability and zkEVM-related verification. In that setting, lower fees alone may no longer be enough to justify an L2 over the long run. The piece says value creation on L2 is likely to shift toward differentiated execution environments, including application-specific optimization, privacy features, and more flexible governance or economic designs. It also puts interoperability, native account abstraction and shorter finality at the center of Ethereum’s next phase, framing the goal as making the network “feel like one chain” again even as activity remains spread across many execution domains. It also highlights Ethereum researcher Barnabé Monnot’s view that, once proof systems become part of mainnet verification, Ethereum L1 could in some sense resemble its own rollup. The point is not that mainnet becomes an L2, but that execution and verification may separate in a way that blurs the old line between base layer and rollup.
