Pre-market roundup: Micron CEO says AI has broken the storage cycle, while OpenAI rolls out Mac iMessage control

U.S. stock futures edged higher before the open, European indexes also moved modestly higher, and oil traded in a tight range. Micron’s CEO said AI has fundamentally changed the outlook for storage and is creating a more durable source of memory demand, with customer needs running about 50% above what the company can commit to supply. OpenAI unveiled a new Mac-based ChatGPT feature for controlling Apple’s iMessage, while Anthropic, SpaceX, Gulfstream? No — the digest also included a delayed bankruptcy-court approval for Google’s $10 million purchase of Spirit Airlines data and a Bank of America note on Bessent’s buyback plan and 30-year Treasury yields.

Rising global bond yields and AI financing concerns drive a broad sell-off in U.S. tech stocks

U.S. stocks fell for a third straight session Tuesday as higher long-term bond yields put fresh pressure on richly valued technology names. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.33%, underperforming the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500, while the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield briefly touched 5.338%, its highest level since 2007. The move was part of a wider global bond sell-off that also pushed long-dated yields higher in France, Germany, Japan and the U.K. Markets are increasingly focused on the growing debt burden tied to artificial intelligence expansion. According to figures cited in the report, AI-related bond issuance has reached $489 billion so far this year, well above an earlier full-year 2025 estimate of roughly $322 billion, while The Wall Street Journal reported that nine major technology companies have about $3 trillion in off-balance-sheet AI commitments. That backdrop hit semiconductors, memory, optical communications and AI cloud-service providers especially hard. Investors are also weighing fiscal deficits, oil-driven inflation risks tied to the Iran situation, and a heavy event calendar that includes U.S. tariffs on some Canadian products, a 20-year Treasury auction, Federal Reserve minutes and China’s one-year LPR decision.

Google Plans $10 Million Purchase of Spirit Airlines Data for AI Training

Google plans to pay $10 million for business data from Spirit Airlines, adding another example of major technology companies buying large data sets to improve artificial intelligence systems. According to CNN, the proposed deal covers internal communications and company records, including emails, spreadsheets, bookings, frequent-flyer information, and employee human resources data. Reuters separately reported that the package also includes Microsoft Teams messages and calendars, along with marketing, productivity, and operations records. Google told CNN that it acquired part of an enterprise data set from Spirit Airlines because the material could help improve its products and AI models. The company said it will not receive personal information, and the data is expected to be stripped of details that could identify individuals before transfer. The sale has not closed yet and still needs court approval. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane is scheduled to review the transaction at a hearing on Wednesday. Spirit halted operations in May and has been selling remaining assets through bankruptcy. Reuters said AI data company Mercor also competed for the assets with a reported $7.5 million bid. The agreement fits into a broader pattern. Google struck a reported $60 million-a-year deal with Reddit in February 2024, OpenAI reached its own Reddit agreement in May 2024, and the Wikimedia Foundation announced content access agreements in January with Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, and others.

Google agrees to buy Spirit Airlines bankruptcy data for $10 million to train AI

Google has agreed to pay $10 million for part of the corporate data held by bankrupt airline Spirit Airlines, according to BlockBeats. The data package is intended to improve Google products and AI models and includes internal emails, Microsoft Teams chats, calendars, spreadsheets, booking and frequent flyer records, plus marketing, productivity, operations and employee HR data. Spirit said the data delivered to Google would be de-identified to remove personally identifiable information. The proposed sale is not final. AI data company Mercor had previously submitted a competing $7.5 million bid for the same data set. The transaction also requires approval from the U.S. bankruptcy court, where Judge Sean Lane is expected to review the matter on Wednesday local time. Spirit Airlines stopped operating in May this year and is now selling its remaining assets through bankruptcy proceedings. The case points to growing demand from AI companies for high-quality training data, with internal business records emerging as a new class of assets for model training and product improvement.
