Long-term Bitcoin holder loses about $750,000 after Google account compromise
Odaily, citing a post from Bitcoin News on X, reported that a long-term Bitcoin holder lost about $750,000 after transferring BTC to a major exchange in Australia. The funds were withdrawn in less than 12 hours. According to the victim’s friend, the attacker had compromised the holder’s Google account for about three months and obtained access to email records as well as Google Authenticator backup credentials stored in the cloud. The attacker then waited until BTC was deposited to the exchange account before moving the assets out. The post said the exchange identified the hacker as the legitimate account owner and approved the withdrawal, with the holder receiving a withdrawal approval notice at 3 a.m. The same post advised users to disable Google Authenticator cloud backups and use hardware security keys such as YubiKey. It also noted that setting up two keys can provide a backup option if one is lost.
