TEAMtalk reported that The Friedkin Group's process to sell a controlling stake in Everton was at an early stage, with American private equity-backed consortiums viewed as the most likely buyers. The Friedkin Group had confirmed three weeks earlier that it was open to selling a controlling stake in the club.
The sale process
The Friedkin Group issued a short statement on 9 October saying the time was right “to consider the next chapter”. Investment bank Moelis & Company is running the process.
TEAMtalk reported that TFG were sifting through multiple enquiries and making a final shortlist of serious buyers. TEAMtalk also reported that sources suggested the club was receiving several enquiries and was beginning to understand who the ‘serious players’ were.
Interested parties
At least two groups have already expressed interest. TEAMtalk reported that a consortium primarily backed by US private equity was widely regarded as the frontrunner.
Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners had also been contacted. The group came close to a deal in 2023 but ultimately withdrew.
TEAMtalk reported that sources close to Staveley had denied any current intention to bid, citing ongoing interest in West Ham United instead. TEAMtalk also reported that interest linked to the family of Michael Dell had resurfaced, but that rumour had been shut down as Michael Dell dismissed the speculation publicly.
Valuation and terms
TEAMtalk reported that sources indicated TFG values the club at around £800 million. TEAMtalk reported that this also covers £350 million worth of debt against the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
TEAMtalk reported that The Friedkin Group had first sought minority investment but were now prepared to sell up completely. The owners have stressed they will only entertain parties they consider suitable and will continue to support the club in the meantime.
TFG's takeover
The Friedkin Group completed its takeover in December 2024 for a sum in excess of £400million.
