Arsenal lost 5-3 on penalties to Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup fourth round on Tuesday, with Mikel Arteta saying effort and attitude were not the issue.

Arsenal were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Fleetwood Town in the fourth round on Tuesday, drawing 1-1 at Highbury Stadium before losing 5-3 in a penalty shootout. Fleetwood Town are 18th in League Two.

How the match unfolded

Aaron Loupalo-Bi scored for Fleetwood Town after 21 minutes. Viktor Gyökeres equalised for Arsenal after 50 minutes.

Shootout and red card

Bruno Guimarães was the only player to miss in the penalty shootout. Max Dowman was sent off late in the match.

Arteta on the defeat

Arteta said: "It’s a really sad day for us. I cannot fault the attitude of the players at all. I haven’t seen anyone not doing what is required at this level."

Arteta said: "We had so much of the ball, so many chances, so many shots, and if you want the margin to be bigger than going to penalties, you have to capitalise on that and we didn’t."

Arteta said: "It was nothing to do with effort or application or determination to go and win it, but we lacked other things to create a much bigger margin that, with what we’ve produced, should have been shown in the scoreline."

Dowman incident

On Dowman's red card, Arteta said: "It’s difficult to see, so I prefer to watch it back properly and then I can assess the situation."

Asked if the 16-year-old can learn from the situation, Arteta said: "Yeah, we’ll learn from everything."
