Barcelona said on Monday that full-back Xavi Espart sustained a syndesmosis injury in his right ankle during Sunday's Clasico against Real Madrid and could be out for up to 7 weeks. The Clasico ended with Real Madrid beating Barcelona 2-1.
Injury and expected absence
Barcelona announced on Monday that Espart sustained an injury to the syndesmosis joint in his right ankle during Sunday's Clasico against Real Madrid. The club said he will miss at least Barcelona's upcoming competitive matches and could be out for up to 7 weeks in total.
How the injury happened
Espart went to ground in the first half, away from the TV cameras, and signalled that he could not continue. Alejandro Balde replaced Espart. GOAL reported that Espart hurt his right leg in a challenge with Real opponent Aurelien Tchouameni.
Defensive absences
Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia are already out with various injuries. Espart has featured on both the right and left sides of defence.
Season appearances and return window
Across all competitions, Espart has made 9 competitive appearances for Barcelona in 2026/27. Espart has 4 goal contributions in 2026/27: 2 goals and 2 assists. If the estimated 7-week absence proves accurate, Espart would not be available to Barcelona again until mid-December. In the worst case, Espart may not return until January.
