Manchester United beat Roma 7-1 at Old Trafford in the Champions League quarter-final second leg on April 10, 2007. The result overturned a 2-1 defeat in the first leg.
First-leg position
Manchester United had lost the first leg 2-1. Paul Scholes was sent off in the first half for two bookable offences, Rodrigo Taddei gave Roma the lead, Wayne Rooney equalised on the hour mark and Mirko Vucinic came off the bench to score the winner for Roma.
Clive Tyldesley exclaimed in commentary: "1-0 will do for Manchester United."
United selection and fast start
A 1-0 win in the return leg would have been enough for Manchester United. In the absence of Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher started in central midfield, while Alan Smith started in attack.
Carrick scored after 11 minutes to put Manchester United ahead, and Smith scored his first goal since November 2005 in the match. Manchester United led 3-0 after 19 minutes.
Ferguson wrote in his programme notes: "If we score tonight and I think we will, we will pull this one off."
Goals through the match
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first Champions League goal in the match and scored after 44 minutes. Ronaldo scored his second goal four minutes into the second half, and Carrick scored again 13 minutes later.
Daniele De Rossi scored for Roma in the 69th minute. Patrice Evra, on as a substitute right-back for O'Shea, scored Manchester United's final goal.
Comments around the game
Before the game, Francesco Totti said: "As a Roma supporter this game is more important to me than the World Cup final was."
Kevin McCarra wrote in his match report for The Guardian: "No one believed it possible to treat an Italian club quite like this."
Reflecting on the match, Roma boss Luciano Spalletti said: "What would I change if I could do it again? Stay at home."
