Manchester United are refusing to terminate JJ Gabriel’s academy registration, delaying a potential move away from Old Trafford. The 16-year-old has made clear that he wants to leave after a breakdown over his pathway towards Michael Carrick’s first team.
Registration request rejected
According to Football Insider, Manchester United will not agree to Gabriel’s request to cancel his registration, preventing him from immediately becoming available to another club. United have also attempted to convince Gabriel to reconsider.
Scholarship offer and pathway talks
The Guardian reported that Manchester United formally offered Gabriel a scholarship deal. Sky Sports reported that first-team medical, coaching and performance staff were personally involved in preparing Gabriel’s pathway.
European interest in his future
United could receive only around £350,000 in training compensation if Gabriel joins a European club. Barcelona have previously been heavily linked with Gabriel, but sporting director Deco publicly denied pursuing him. More recent reporting suggests Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have moved ahead in the race, with both clubs holding talks over his future.
