Sports Illustrated published a feature on Ronald Araújo's form at Liverpool during his season-long loan from Barcelona. Liverpool announced his arrival on a season-long deal with an option to buy in August, and the Barcelona captain has already produced returns in the Premier League and Champions League.
Premier League impact
Araújo had started only 11 La Liga matches in 2025–26, but he has started six out of eight games in the Premier League so far. In Sunday's 2–0 win over Brighton, he was awarded Player of the Match.
In that game, Araújo won all five of his duels, made 11 defensive contributions and recorded a top speed of 36.3 km/h.
Champions League returns
Araújo already has two Champions League goals and an assist. The assist was a backheel to set up Dominik Szoboszlai in the comeback win over Atlético Madrid.
Araújo and Carragher comments
Araújo took a leave of absence from Barcelona for mental health reasons half a year before the fresh start he found at Liverpool. He has also spoken positively of Barcelona's support for him while dealing with his anxiety struggles.
When asked about his future recently, Araújo said: "It’s very early to talk about these things. I’m just trying to enjoy every day and continue to develop and to play and to give what’s required of me to have that confidence. I’m really happy to be here."
Jamie Carragher said: "The fans have absolutely fallen in love with him straight away. Sometimes you have players like that. They’ve come, they’ve got a bit of a backstory. At Barcelona maybe they were happy to see him go, but the Liverpool supporters opened their arms and gave him a big cuddle, and he seems to be enjoying it."
Option to buy and Barcelona shirt number
Liverpool have a £47 million ($63 million) option to buy Araújo at the end of the season.
At the start of the season, Eric García told Cadena SER: "Ronald has left on loan for a year and, if everything goes well, he will return."
García also said: "It’s his number, out of respect for him I didn’t want to take it."
