Paul Cafiero, Communications Partner at a16z Crypto, posted on X that the crypto industry has entered a 'Show Me' era. He noted that having only a vision and a minimum viable product (MVP) is no longer sufficient to gain market recognition, as the industry's validation standards have fundamentally shifted.
Traditional Finance Raises the Bar
Cafiero emphasized that traditional financial institutions are accelerating their entry into crypto, citing BlackRock's tokenized money market fund, Fidelity's application for a crypto ETF, and JPMorgan's use of its internal blockchain for trade settlements. These major players have permanently raised the industry standards, making it impossible for projects to attract investment based on concepts alone.
Validation Now Driven by Real Data
Regarding partnerships, Cafiero noted that they now require real deployment cases and partners willing to publicly endorse the project, rather than mere letters of intent or framework agreements. On the data front, the market looks at mainnet transaction volume, active users, revenue, and retention curves—not testnet figures. The strongest proof of product-market fit is no longer a launch announcement but an organically growing community that forms before the product goes live. Cafiero believes that the industry's old logic of 'vision as product' is fading, and the criteria for validating projects have fundamentally changed. Projects must deliver tangible results to survive.
