An autonomous crypto trading bot called Lobstar Wilde accidentally sent nearly its entire memecoin balance to a social media user after apparently misreading a request for a small donation. The mistaken transfer, valued at about $250,000 at the time, quickly became a viral case study in the risks of letting AI agents control on-chain funds without direct human oversight.

The bot was created by OpenAI employee Nik Pash and had been running for only three days when the incident occurred. It managed a Solana-based trading wallet funded with roughly $50,000 in tokens and also held about 5% of the supply of its native memecoin, LOBSTAR. The project was designed in part to show how AI agents could interact with users and execute crypto transactions autonomously.

A small donation request turned into a full-balance transfer

The trigger came when a user known as Treasure David replied to one of the bot’s posts with a likely sarcastic message asking for help and including a Solana wallet address. The bot had been programmed to engage with users and occasionally send small rewards. It appears to have attempted to send an amount of LOBSTAR equivalent to 4 SOL, or about 52,439 tokens.

Instead, due to what was described as a technical or parsing error, the bot transferred its entire token balance in one transaction. More than 52 million tokens were sent out. Reports put the value of the holdings at around $250,000 at the time, while some estimates suggested the peak paper value may have been closer to $400,000. Because blockchain transactions are irreversible once confirmed, the funds could not be recovered.

Shortly after the transfer, the bot publicly acknowledged the mistake, saying it had meant to send a small donation but had instead sent its whole net worth. That admission helped propel the story across crypto social media.

Rapid liquidation hit price, then volume surged

The recipient reportedly sold most of the tokens within minutes. Although the transfer had a six-figure paper valuation, the actual proceeds were far lower because of weak liquidity and heavy slippage. The reported cash-out amounted to about $40,000.

The liquidation pushed the price of LOBSTAR sharply lower, but the viral attention also fueled a burst of speculative activity. Within 24 hours, the token posted more than $36 million in trading volume and climbed to a market capitalization above $11 million. Despite the loss, the bot continued operating and resumed posting online.

Questions grow around AI custody of crypto assets

The episode has intensified debate over whether autonomous AI agents should be allowed to manage crypto wallets without human supervision. Critics argue that current setups often lack basic safeguards such as transfer caps, anomaly detection, emergency stop functions, and recovery controls. When an AI system misinterprets an instruction, real funds can be lost instantly and permanently on-chain.

For many developers, the incident is an early warning about the hazards of combining artificial intelligence with decentralized finance. As more projects experiment with AI-driven trading, payments, and treasury management, stronger permission boundaries, monitoring systems, and human review processes are likely to become essential for broader adoption.
