How the window works
Premier League clubs can only buy players while their own window is open. Selling works differently: a club can still sell after the Premier League window has shut if the buying club plays in a league where the window is still open.
A signing can also be announced before the registration is completed. That means a public announcement and the formal registration step are not always the same moment.
Why there are two windows
The two-window system was introduced for the 2002/03 season as part of an agreement with the European Commission. Before that, Premier League players could be traded during the season until 31 March.
Leagues do not have full freedom to choose any dates they want. FIFA sets the framework, and domestic leagues work within those limits. Premier League clubs also voted to shut the summer window on the day before the season began in 2018 and 2019.
Length of the windows and contract rules
The summer window lasts close to three months, while the January window lasts about one.
From 1 January, players who are in the last six months of their contracts can agree moves with clubs from another national association. That agreement does not mean the player is already registered in the Premier League.
