Anthropic said it has expanded its Claude Startups program, offering selected companies a free year of Claude Team and a one-time $1,000 in API credits. The company announced the update during SF Tech Week on Oct. 6, and also loosened the application rules so startups no longer need prior institutional venture funding to qualify.
The package carries a stated value of up to $7,000. Anthropic breaks that figure down into $6,000 for five Claude Team seats and another $1,000 in API credits.
How the offer is calculated
In its official announcement, Anthropic said approved members can receive one year of Claude Team at no cost, with up to five Premium seats, plus a one-time $1,000 API credit after passing review.
A footnote in the announcement lays out the math: each seat is priced at $100 per month on an annual billing plan. Five seats over 12 months total $6,000, and the extra $1,000 in API credits brings the package to $7,000.
Eligibility has been broadened
The FAQ on the program page says applicants must meet one of two conditions: they were founded within the past five years, or they raised funding within the past two years. Applicants also need a Claude Console account, a company email tied to their website domain, and a short description of their product.
Anthropic says bootstrapped teams, pre-seed startups, and venture-backed companies are all eligible to apply.
What changed from the prior version
The contrast with the earlier version is clear. According to a Sept. 25 archive captured by Wayback Machine, the same page previously required applicants to have raised equity financing from institutional investors, to be within four years of founding, and to have never received Anthropic startup credits. The older page copy asked, "Backed by VCs? Apply for free credits and priority rate limits."
Under the revised rules, the founding window has been extended from four years to five, and prior institutional funding is no longer a requirement.
Review speed and added support
Anthropic said most applications receive a result within minutes. The rest are routed to manual review, which usually takes two to three business days.
Approved members automatically receive higher API rate limits. They can also get help listing on Claude Marketplace and access to event slots such as Founder House.
Excluded regions and final discretion
The program terms list several excluded jurisdictions. Companies established or operating in China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Belarus, or Cuba, as well as companies planning to offer services there, are not eligible.
Anthropic added that it retains sole discretion over eligibility. Factors it considers include business traction, fundraising status, and the extent of Claude integration and usage.
