Anthropic is pushing to restore export access for its Fable and Mythos models. The Washington Post reported that company executives submitted a proposal to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, promising closer coordination with the White House and faster action on model safety concerns.
Proposal centers on removing limits on two flagship models
The effort is aimed squarely at lifting export restrictions on Fable and Mythos. According to the report, Anthropic offered to improve communication with the U.S. government and address the safety issues that triggered the controls. The company said it would move more quickly on future risks and work more closely with the White House on security matters.
Talks are still active. People familiar with the matter said discussions have gone well so far, but there is no firm timetable for when the restrictions could be lifted.
Safety concerns followed reports of guardrail bypasses
The dispute began after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy warned the government that researchers had found ways to bypass the models’ safety guardrails. Lutnick then moved to restrict exports, citing concern that Fable and Mythos could end up in the hands of military intelligence agencies in countries including China and Russia.
Anthropic’s position in the current negotiations is straightforward: offer more transparency and faster handling of safety issues in exchange for renewed access to overseas markets for its two most advanced models.
Tom Brown and Sarah Heck are leading the talks
As of Thursday, the negotiations were being led by Anthropic co-founder and chief computation officer Tom Brown and public policy head Sarah Heck, according to people familiar with the matter. Neither Anthropic nor the Commerce Department responded to requests for comment.
Until the ban is removed, Fable and Mythos remain under export restrictions. A final decision still rests with the White House and the Commerce Department.
