The competition in the oil futures market is intensifying as Binance rapidly gains ground against established player HIP-3. Combined month-to-date (MTD) oil trading volume across both platforms has reached $42.5 billion, with HIP-3 still holding a 56% market share. However, Binance’s trajectory is unmistakable.
Binance's Rising Share
Since launching oil futures on April 1, Binance has averaged a 44% market share. That figure climbed to 49.3% after April 9, and peaked at an impressive 54% on April 17. The data underscores Binance's ability to rapidly attract liquidity and traders from HIP-3.
A Critical Battleground
Oil futures represent a vital product for HIP-3, accounting for 55% of its total traditional finance (TradFi) perpetuals volume. This means Binance’s encroachment directly threatens HIP-3’s core revenue stream, making oil futures the key competitive battleground between the two platforms.
Market Implications
Analysts believe Binance’s low fees, large user base, and advanced engine are driving the shift. If the trend continues, Binance could soon overtake HIP-3 in oil futures. In response, HIP-3 is expected to launch countermeasures, potentially including fee cuts or liquidity incentives. For traders, this rivalry promises tighter spreads and better execution, boosting overall market activity.
