Bitcoin is approaching a closely watched “golden cross” pattern as its recent rally pushes price action back above a key long-term trend line. According to CoinDesk, BTC has climbed past $71,000 and is up more than 12% over the past week, with momentum now focused on whether the 50-day simple moving average can rise above the 200-day simple moving average. At present, Bitcoin is trading slightly above its 200-day SMA. The 50-day average stands at about $63,976, while the 200-day average is around $69,005. A crossover between the two is widely followed as a bullish long-term technical signal. The 200-day moving average is often used to gauge broader market direction, with sustained trading above it seen as a sign of a shift from bearish to bullish conditions. Still, the setup is not viewed as certain confirmation. CoinDesk noted that some analysts see the move as potentially a technical rebound rather than the start of a fresh long-term uptrend. If Bitcoin falls back below the 200-day average, the bullish case tied to the potential golden cross could weaken.

Bitcoin is moving closer to a “golden cross,” a chart pattern widely watched by the market as a possible long-term bullish signal.

Data cited by CoinDesk shows BTC has risen above $71,000 after gaining more than 12% over the past week. The price is now trading slightly above its 200-day simple moving average, while the 50-day average sits at about $63,976 and the 200-day average is around $69,005.

The 50-day average is closing in on the 200-day line

If the 50-day moving average keeps rising and breaks above the 200-day moving average, Bitcoin would form a golden cross. In technical analysis, the 200-day moving average is commonly used to track the market’s long-term direction.

Holding above that level over time is often read as a shift from a bear market to a bull market. A break back below it can point to weakening long-term momentum.

The broader trend is still under scrutiny

Before this move, Bitcoin had remained below the 200-day moving average since October 2025, when the price was around $110,000 and the long-term trend stayed under pressure.

Historical data shows BTC formed golden crosses in February 2023, October 2023, October 2024 and April 2025. Each was followed by additional upside.

Even so, uncertainty remains. Analysts cited by CoinDesk said the current rise could still be a technical rebound rather than the start of a new long-term upcycle. If Bitcoin drops back below the 200-day moving average, the bullish argument tied to the golden cross could come under pressure.
