Bitcoin extended its rally on Aug. 21, climbing from an overnight low near $68,900 to as high as $73,990, its strongest level in nearly two months. The move came after the U.S. Treasury said it would expand long-dated bond buybacks, a development the report cited as a key macro catalyst, while short covering in crypto derivatives added force to the advance. Ethereum moved higher as well, holding above $2,340. Liquidation data from CoinGlass showed that $960 million worth of crypto positions were wiped out over the past 24 hours. Short positions accounted for $788 million of that total, compared with $171 million in long liquidations, and 121,000 traders were liquidated. The largest single liquidation order was a $25.13 million BTC-USD position on Hyperliquid. The broader market also moved up. Bitcoin was quoted at $73,685, up 6.04% over 24 hours, while Ether traded at $2,340, up 3.36%. XRP led major tokens with a gain of more than 14% to $1.2648, after touching $1.3441. Solana rose 3.62% to $88.18. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index rose to 72 from 62 a day earlier, after falling as low as 29 within the prior eight days.

Bitcoin extended its advance on Aug. 21, rising from an overnight low of about $68,900 to as high as $73,990, a near two-month high, after the U.S. Treasury announced a larger long-dated bond buyback program and a short squeeze rippled through crypto derivatives. Ether climbed at the same time and held above $2,340, while the broader crypto market cap expanded with risk appetite improving.
