Bitcoin’s Computing Power Hits a Fresh Record
Bitcoin’s network strength reached a new milestone this week as the protocol’s hashrate climbed to an all-time high of 292.02 exahash per second (EH/s) at block height 739,928. The move pushed Bitcoin close to the symbolic 300 EH/s threshold for the first time, highlighting just how much computational power is now being devoted to securing the blockchain.
The new peak surpassed the previous record of 275.01 EH/s, which was logged on May 2, 2022, at block height 734,577. That means Bitcoin’s hashrate increased by roughly 6.18% in just 37 days. Measured against the next major milestone, the latest peak sat only about 2.73% below 300 EH/s, or 0.3 zettahash per second.
In practical terms, a hashrate of 292.02 EH/s means that nearly 292 quintillion hashes per second were being generated to validate blocks and protect the Bitcoin blockchain. The rise underscores the scale of industrial mining activity behind the network and reflects the system’s growing security budget in terms of raw computation.
Difficulty Adjustment Moves Higher Instead of Lower
One of the more notable developments in the report was the unexpected direction of Bitcoin’s mining difficulty adjustment. Analysts had anticipated a slight decrease in difficulty around June 8, but the network instead registered a 1.29% increase on Wednesday.
Just a day earlier, on June 7, projections suggested that difficulty would fall by about 0.51%. The reversal illustrates how quickly mining conditions can change when hashrate rises faster than expected. Bitcoin’s difficulty adjustment algorithm is designed to respond to block production rates, making it highly sensitive to sudden shifts in aggregate miner participation.
Even after the increase, the network’s current difficulty remained below its previous all-time high of 31.25 trillion, recorded on May 10, 2022. At the time of the report, difficulty stood at approximately 30.28 trillion, and it was expected to remain there until the next retarget date on June 21. That left roughly 1,600 blocks before the next scheduled recalibration.
Top Mining Pools Continue to Lead the Network
Data from the previous 72 hours showed that the largest mining pools continued to account for a significant share of Bitcoin’s total hashrate. Foundry USA ranked as the leading pool, contributing around 52.42 EH/s. Over the observed three-day period, Foundry discovered 109 block rewards out of the 475 blocks mined across the network.
Antpool followed with about 35.11 EH/s and mined 73 blocks during the same period. F2Pool came next with approximately 32 EH/s, accounting for 67 blocks. These figures indicate that a relatively small number of large industrial mining pools continue to command a substantial portion of Bitcoin’s hashpower.
While the concentration of hashrate among major pools is often discussed in the context of mining centralization, the broader takeaway from the report is that the network itself has become more computationally secure. A higher hashrate generally raises the cost and complexity of attempting to attack the blockchain, especially at Bitcoin’s current scale.
What the Record Hashrate Means for Bitcoin
The record hashrate comes at a time when mining economics remain closely tied to both network difficulty and the pace of block production. Because Bitcoin adjusts difficulty based on how quickly blocks are found, sustained strength in hashrate can translate into higher mining difficulty in subsequent retargets. According to the report, if prevailing metrics held steady, the next adjustment could increase difficulty by another 1.52%, although that estimate was subject to change.
For miners, a higher difficulty level means stronger competition for the same block rewards. For the network, however, it is generally interpreted as a sign of resilience and confidence from mining operators willing to keep machines online and contribute more computational power.
The latest all-time high also reinforces a broader point: despite fluctuations in forecasts and periodic changes in mining conditions, Bitcoin’s infrastructure continues to expand. The jump toward 300 EH/s signals that mining capacity remains robust, and that operators are still dedicating enormous resources to securing the chain.
Looking Ahead to the Next Retarget
The next major variable for the market to watch is whether this elevated hashrate can be sustained through the next roughly 1,600 blocks. If miners continue to produce blocks at a faster-than-target pace, difficulty may rise again at the upcoming adjustment. If hashpower falls back, the estimate could soften before the retarget date arrives.
Either way, the report makes one thing clear: Bitcoin’s network has reached its strongest level on record in terms of raw computational throughput. As the hashrate edges closer to 300 EH/s, attention will now turn to whether the network can maintain this momentum and how that strength will shape future mining conditions.
