Bitdeer’s Norwegian unit has signed a construction deal with DCI to turn its Tydal site into a 180 MW AI data center by December 2026, expanding from bitcoin mining into GPU-based AI colocation.

Bitdeer is pushing further beyond bitcoin mining and into AI infrastructure. The company’s Norwegian subsidiary, Tydal Data Center AS, has signed a construction agreement with Data Center Installations AS (DCI) to expand the Tydal site in Trøndelag, Norway, into a 180-megawatt AI data center, with completion targeted for December 2026.

Project targets European AI colocation demand

The expanded facility is being designed primarily for AI colocation services based on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin GPU architecture, following Nvidia’s reference design. DCI will oversee the project end to end, including design, planning, installation, testing, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance. If delivered on schedule, the Tydal site would become the largest operating AI data center in Norway and rank among the larger facilities in Europe by installed capacity.

Bitdeer said it had already been working through 2025 and into 2026 to convert the site from bitcoin mining infrastructure into AI-focused capacity, including ordering long-lead equipment and carrying out pre-construction design work. Headquartered in Singapore, Bitdeer operates data centers in the United States, Norway, Bhutan, and Ethiopia, with businesses spanning both bitcoin mining and high-performance AI computing infrastructure.

Hydropower, immersion cooling, and heat reuse

A central part of the Tydal project is its sustainability profile. The site is powered by 100% carbon-free hydropower and will use immersion cooling technology. Excess heat generated on site is also expected to be redirected to support food production on a neighboring plot, adding a local industrial and environmental dimension to the project.

Haakon Bryhni, chairman and co-founder of Tydal Data Center AS, described the conversion as a key milestone in Bitdeer’s global strategy to meet surging AI data center demand. DCI co-founder Bjørn Arve Olsen said the contract represents an important financial and operational milestone for the contractor, highlighting the scale of the development as well as built-in cost and schedule control mechanisms.

Norway’s appeal for large-scale AI infrastructure

The project comes as demand for GPU-intensive data center capacity continues to strain supply across Europe. Norway’s combination of low-cost hydropower, existing data center infrastructure, and carbon-compliant energy supply has made it increasingly attractive to hyperscale operators and AI computing providers. For Bitdeer, the Tydal buildout represents both a strategic pivot and a dedicated renewable-powered foothold in the European AI colocation market.
