South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb has found itself at the center of one of the most dramatic operational mistakes in recent crypto market memory. According to the exchange, a promotional rewards event that was supposed to distribute about 2,000 Korean won, or roughly $1.40, to users was processed incorrectly. Instead of issuing a small cash reward, the system or internal process mistakenly sent Bitcoin, and some users reportedly received at least 2,000 BTC each.
The result was enormous. Bithumb said the error led to the accidental distribution of about 620,000 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $44 billion at current prices. The exchange later apologized and emphasized that the event had nothing to do with an outside hack or a security breach. In its statement, Bithumb said there were no problems with system security or with the custody of customer assets. In other words, the incident was not a theft event but a severe internal payout failure tied to how rewards were issued.
The exchange said it moved quickly once the error was discovered. Within 35 minutes, it restricted trading and withdrawals for 695 affected customers in an effort to prevent the mistakenly distributed Bitcoin from spreading further. Even so, local reports said a small number of recipients were able to sell or trade the coins before the restrictions were applied. Bithumb told local media that it had not yet recovered 125 BTC, worth around $9 million, from a small group of customers. The company added that any remaining loss would be covered using its own corporate funds.
How the Bithumb payout error disrupted Bitcoin trading
The most immediate consequence of the blunder was visible on Bithumb’s own market. Platform charts showed that Bitcoin briefly plunged 17% during the selloff, falling to 81.1 million won, or roughly $55,000, before recovering. Later, the price rebounded to around 104.5 million won. Even though the disruption was limited to one exchange, the move illustrated how quickly internal operational failures can spill into visible market dislocation.
The mechanics are straightforward. If even a handful of users suddenly receive very large amounts of BTC and begin selling before platform restrictions are imposed, the exchange can experience abnormal and concentrated sell pressure. Other traders, seeing a sudden drop, may panic and sell as well, creating a feedback loop. That means an internal accounting or rewards mistake can evolve into a trading integrity issue, affecting price discovery, liquidity conditions, and user confidence in the platform’s market.
South Korean regulators reacted quickly. The country’s Financial Services Commission said the incident exposed vulnerabilities in the virtual asset sector. Officials said they would review internal control systems at domestic exchanges and launch on-site inspections if irregularities were found. This is significant because it shows that regulatory attention is expanding beyond classic security concerns such as hacking, anti-money laundering, and customer asset segregation. Operational controls, authorization structures, and payout procedures are now clearly part of the supervision conversation as well.
According to South Korean newspaper Kookmin Ilbo, regulators had already begun an inspection at Bithumb’s offices on February 7. Investigators reportedly requested a list of employees authorized to issue crypto payments. Sources quoted by the paper described the event as evidence of “structural vulnerabilities” in the exchange’s operating processes. That framing matters because it suggests the issue may not be a one-off data entry accident, but a symptom of deeper weaknesses in process design and internal controls.
Reports also indicated that Bithumb’s internal system allowed employees to issue loyalty points, Korean won, Bitcoin, and Ethereum without formal settlement procedures. That kind of setup sharply increases the risk of payout mistakes. When staff can move between marketing rewards, fiat credits, and crypto distributions without layered verification, a small configuration error can scale into a system-wide incident. From a risk management perspective, anything involving fiat balances, points, and on-platform crypto payouts should normally be protected by stronger approval chains, settlement checks, and hard operational limits.
Bithumb executives themselves acknowledged internal shortcomings. In an email to employees, Exchange Business Division Vice President Hwang Seung-wook reportedly said the incident demonstrated weaknesses in the company’s current processes. He wrote that the fact a single mistake in setting an event reward unit could destabilize an entire crypto exchange showed the true state of the firm’s systems. He also said the company would focus on eliminating failures in oversight rather than simply blaming individuals.
Bithumb’s compensation plan and the broader fallout
After the trading disruption, Bithumb announced a package of customer compensation measures. Users who sold Bitcoin at unusually low prices during the abnormal market conditions would receive the full amount of their sale proceeds plus an additional 10%. The purpose of that policy is clear: to address direct losses suffered by users who reacted to the sudden selloff and exited positions at distorted prices during the glitch window.
The exchange also said it would waive trading fees across all markets for seven days beginning on February 9. In addition, Bithumb said it would provide 20,000 Korean won, or about $15, to customers who were actively using the platform at the time of the incident. Structurally, the compensation plan targets two overlapping groups: traders who suffered measurable execution losses and active users who were exposed to operational disruption even if they did not complete a trade.
The timing of the error makes the situation even more sensitive. Bithumb has been pursuing plans to become the first South Korean crypto exchange to go public in the United States in 2026. At that stage of corporate development, failures involving internal controls, trading reliability, and operational governance attract far more attention from regulators, investors, counterparties, and the public. A company preparing for a U.S. listing is generally expected to demonstrate not just commercial scale, but mature governance and robust internal systems.
Earlier this month, South Korea’s consumer protection watchdog had already launched a probe into Bithumb’s marketing claims. That means the exchange is now dealing with more than a single operational embarrassment. It faces simultaneous scrutiny over marketing practices, internal controls, compensation obligations, and governance quality. For any exchange seeking a public listing, especially abroad, these issues can shape how outsiders assess management credibility and institutional readiness.
For now, Bithumb is clearly in damage-control mode. It has promised to compensate users who lost money because of panic selling during the malfunction, and it has pledged to review and upgrade its internal systems to prevent similar mistakes in the future. However, the company has not yet released detailed information on what those fixes will look like in practice. Questions remain about whether it will tighten employee payout authority, introduce layered approval mechanisms, formalize settlement gates, or build stronger real-time alerts around reward and asset distribution tools.
The episode offers a broader lesson for the crypto industry. Exchanges often emphasize defense against hackers, wallet security, and custody controls. Those remain essential, but major losses and market disorder can also come from something far less dramatic: weak internal processes, poor permissions design, or an error in configuring a small promotional campaign. When reward systems, asset crediting functions, and trading infrastructure are not properly separated, a minor mistake can escalate into a market event. For users, that matters just as much as external security, because it affects whether pricing is fair, whether execution is orderly, and whether an exchange can contain the damage and make customers whole when something goes wrong.
