In September 2024, Bitmain introduced its latest bitcoin mining machine, the Antminer U3S21EXPH, boasting a hashrate of 860 terahash per second (TH/s). This represents a 81.81% improvement over its predecessor, the Antminer S21 XP Hydro (473 TH/s), and a mind-blowing 477,677% increase compared to the original Antminer S1 (0.18 TH/s) launched in 2013.
From 180 GH/s to 860 TH/s: The Evolution of ASIC Miners
When Bitmain released the S1 in November 2013, Bitcoin's total network hashrate was just 5 PH/s (5,000 TH/s). The S1's 0.18 TH/s output seemed modest even then, but it marked the beginning of an era. Over the next decade, Bitmain iterated rapidly: the S2 reached 1 TH/s in early 2014, followed by the S3, S4, and S5 series. By 2016-2017, the S9 series (10-14.5 TH/s) dominated, powering over 50% of the network at its peak. Competitors like Bitfury, Canaan, and Innosilicon also struggled to keep pace, with many eventually exiting the market.
Fast forward to September 2024, Bitcoin's hashrate hit an all-time high of 693 exahash per second (EH/s), equivalent to 693,000,000 TH/s. The U3S21EXPH alone now matches roughly one-eighth of the entire network's capacity from 2013.
Profitability and Cost Analysis
At an electricity cost of $0.04 per kWh, the U3S21EXPH is projected to generate $34.36 in daily profit, excluding hardware acquisition costs. In contrast, the once-dominant S9 now loses about $2.70 per day under the same conditions, highlighting the relentless march of efficiency. Bitmain currently prices older models at $23-$27 per TH/s, suggesting the U3S21EXPH could retail for around $19,780 at the lower end.
Zettahash Era on the Horizon
The leap from 473 TH/s to 860 TH/s demonstrates that ASIC mining hardware has not yet hit a performance ceiling. With Bitmain and Microbt (M63S+ at 450 TH/s) pushing boundaries, the industry is approaching the zettahash (10^21) epoch. The key question remains: will ever-increasing hashrate and efficiency continue indefinitely, or will physical limitations eventually slow progress?
