Bitpay's development team has released a preview of Bitcore 5.0, a modular full node for Bitcoin and blockchain applications. Unlike previous versions that depended on custom extensions of the Bitcoin software, Bitcore 5.0 allows users to run any Bitcoin protocol implementation — even forked versions — as long as the client can successfully connect to the network.
Modular Nodes: Freedom to Switch Clients
"Now you can change your Bitcoin client, upgrade it or downgrade it, whenever and however you want — as long as your client can talk to the Bitcoin network, Bitcore can use it," Bitpay explained in the announcement. This means node operators can easily switch between implementations such as Bitcoin Core, Bcoin, or even designate a Bitcoin Cash (BCH) node, all without forking Bitcore's codebase.
Default Bcoin with Native SegWit Support
Bitcore 5.0 defaults to the Bcoin implementation, a full Node.js-based client known for better functionality and extensibility. Bitpay noted that deploying a block explorer is now simpler: "Spin up a Bcoin-based Bitcore full node and block explorer in two easy steps." Additionally, Bcoin natively supports Segregated Witness (SegWit), giving users instant access to the benefits of SegWit without extra configuration.
Bitcoin Cash Node Support
Responding to a Reddit query about Bitcoin Cash support, Bitpay's James Walpole said that Bitcore 5.0 can be pointed to a BCH node. "If you are running a Bitcoin application (like a block explorer) using Bitcore, you can designate a Bitcoin Cash node. This would mean your own block explorer would now query the Bitcoin Cash blockchain, and it would not impact any Bitpay services," he explained. This flexibility allows developers to support multiple blockchains with a single framework.
Significance and Outlook
Bitcore 5.0 represents a major step toward modular, multi-client compatibility for Bitcoin node software. Previously, switching clients or supporting forks often required forking and adapting the entire codebase. By decoupling the underlying implementation from the application layer, Bitcore reduces maintenance overhead and encourages technical diversity in the Bitcoin ecosystem. As more innovative implementations emerge, Bitcore 5.0 could serve as a unified bridge connecting different Bitcoin clients.
