Ownership Is Distributed, but Incentive Design Remains Core-Team Led
ChainCatcher reported that Bittensor co-founder const published a post on X outlining the project’s current decentralization status, future roadmap and long-term objective. In his explanation, Bittensor has not yet achieved decentralization at the economic incentive layer. The project’s direction is still led by the core team, including const himself, two engineers and a broader group of core contributors.
const also described the parts of Bittensor that he views as already decentralized. The project has been live for more than five years, had no pre-mine, and now includes 128 subnet teams and more than 20 core validator teams. On the level of ownership distribution, he said Bittensor has achieved decentralization, while the design and steering of economic incentives remain under concentrated coordination by the project’s core builders.
According to const, the team has chosen to preserve a degree of centralization in order to iterate quickly, rather than moving updates through a slower process of “democratized” decision-making. His comments separate Bittensor’s current structure into two layers: distributed ownership and participation on one side, and a still centrally coordinated mechanism layer on the other.
Validator Competition, Alpha Voting and TaoFlow Updates
Looking ahead, Bittensor plans to bring validators back into a competitive mechanism. The project will also open two-way investment in liquidity pools in order to make the market structure more symmetrical and prevent on-chain signals from being manipulated. Another planned change is the introduction of a conviction mechanism that gives Alpha token holders voting rights.
const further said that updates to TaoFlow and its derivatives will be released in the coming weeks. Bittensor will also continue fine-tuning the issuance allocation algorithm, with the stated goal of improving how inflation is distributed. Under the timeline described by const, the project aims to complete its core mechanism construction within the next year and a half.
Once that work is completed, const said Bittensor’s three pillars—aligned incentives, value optimization and true ownership—are intended to operate together. The final target described in his post is for Bittensor to discard centralized control and complete its transition to full decentralization.
