Crypto platform Blockchain.com has filed two applications with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, seeking approval to offer event contracts and cryptocurrency derivatives to both retail and institutional customers in the United States, according to CNBC. The company is applying to become a designated contract market, which would allow it to run a regulated futures venue, and is also seeking registration as a futures commission merchant to provide derivatives brokerage services. Co-founder and CEO Peter Smith said the aim is to let users manage digital assets, trade derivatives, and trade on real-world events on a single platform. Earlier this year, Blockchain.com partnered with Polymarket to offer prediction market services to some users, and it has also provided perpetual futures trading to some international customers through Hyperliquid. CNBC said 12 companies, including Blockchain.com, have applied for CFTC designated contract market licenses this year, while the regulator has approved six new trading venues so far in 2026. The company is also advancing its public listing plans after confidentially submitting a draft IPO registration statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission in May. Bloomberg previously reported that Blockchain.com was targeting a valuation of $4 billion to $6 billion.

Blockchain.com has filed two license applications with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, aiming to offer event contracts and cryptocurrency derivatives trading to retail and institutional customers in the United States, according to CNBC.

The company is seeking designation as a designated contract market, or DCM, which would let it operate a regulated futures trading venue. It has also applied for registration as a futures commission merchant, or FCM, to provide derivatives brokerage services.

Co-founder and CEO Peter Smith said the company wants users to manage digital assets, trade derivatives, and trade on real-world events on the same platform.

Existing moves in prediction markets and derivatives

Earlier this year, Blockchain.com partnered with Polymarket to provide prediction market services to some users. It has also offered perpetual futures trading to some international customers through Hyperliquid. The new applications show the company is trying to extend those businesses into the US market.

CFTC approvals this year

CNBC said 12 companies, including Blockchain.com, have applied for CFTC designated contract market licenses this year. The regulator has approved six new trading platforms so far this year.

As crypto trading platforms and prediction markets move closer together, more companies are trying to enter the event contracts and derivatives business.

IPO plans are also moving ahead

Blockchain.com is also working on a public listing. The company confidentially submitted a draft IPO registration statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission in May this year. Bloomberg previously reported that the company planned to go public this year and was targeting a valuation of $4 billion to $6 billion.
