Charles Hoskinson rejects the narrative that Cardano ignored scaling for governance, emphasizing years of development on Layer-2, eUTXO, and Leios. He defends the Voltaire upgrade as community-driven and declares Cardano now has the strongest scaling strategy in crypto.

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has mounted a forceful rebuttal against critics who claim the network sidelined scaling in favor of governance. Calling the narrative misleading, he reiterated that scaling work has been constant for years. The exchange underscores a broader crypto debate: speed versus decentralization and long-term viability.

Governance Concerns Surface

Last week, analyst Cardano Yoda raised a structural issue: Cardano's earlier triad of IOG, Cardano Foundation, and EMURGO has given way to on-chain governance where DReps vote on spending and another group handles execution. Yet DReps often lack alignment on strategy or priorities, leaving real execution heavily dependent on the original founding teams. Without better coordination, Yoda warned, the system could explode.

Hoskinson Rejects 'Scaling Set Aside' Narrative

“I am getting insanely tired of hearing a false narrative that we abandoned scaling,” Hoskinson said, insisting development never stopped. He listed pre-Shelley scaling efforts: Layer-2 innovations, the eUTXO accounting model, zero-knowledge research, and advanced systems like Leios and Peras. Scaling demands deep research, not quick fixes, and adding developers doesn't accelerate progress.

Why Governance Was Introduced

Hoskinson explained that the Voltaire upgrade aimed to give the community control over how and when scaling upgrades are implemented. “Implementing Voltaire means that every single one of you has a voice and a vote.” He argued that scaling changes require constant iteration and cannot be rushed, contrasting Cardano's careful approach with networks that prioritized speed over stability.

A 'Future-Proof' Scaling Plan

Hoskinson asserts that Cardano now boasts the most advanced scaling strategy in the crypto space, pointing to Leios and a comprehensive Layer-2 roadmap. “We now have the best scaling strategy in the entire cryptocurrency space,” he stated. This approach demands patience but promises stronger performance over time. He also referenced Bitcoin's governance challenges, where disputes over proposals can fracture the community — a fate Cardano's model is designed to avoid.
