OpenAI updated the ChatGPT iPhone app on March 31 to add CarPlay support, making it the first major AI app available on Apple’s in-car platform. According to 9to5Mac, Apple introduced a new “voice conversation app” category for CarPlay with iOS 26.4 on March 24, opening the door for AI assistants to appear directly in the dashboard interface.
Apple opens a new app category in CarPlay
Before iOS 26.4, CarPlay had tight limits on what kinds of apps could be listed, mainly focusing on audio, navigation, and charging-related functions. The new software release changed that by adding support for voice conversation apps. OpenAI moved quickly after the change and brought ChatGPT to CarPlay ahead of other major AI developers.
Current experience is voice-only with limited controls
The CarPlay version of ChatGPT uses a voice-only interface. On screen, users see only two buttons: “end” and “mute.” There is no text output and no image display. The interaction is close to the voice chat experience on iPhone, but the feature set is narrower. Users cannot start it with a wake word and must manually open the app to begin a conversation. It also cannot control vehicle functions or iPhone settings.
Gemini and Claude have access but remain unavailable
Apple also opened CarPlay authorization to Gemini and Claude in iOS 26.4, according to the source material. Even so, neither app has gone live on the platform so far. That leaves ChatGPT as the only mainstream AI voice app currently released for CarPlay.
Tesla’s built-in Grok still has deeper integration
The gap is more obvious when compared with Tesla’s built-in Grok assistant from xAI. The source notes that Grok can directly control vehicle functions, while ChatGPT on CarPlay cannot. In practical terms, ChatGPT currently works more like an in-car conversational assistant than a deeply integrated automotive control system.
Reactions to in-car AI remain mixed. Some Tesla owners have said Grok is more useful than expected, while others question the need for AI conversation during driving. Even so, Apple’s new CarPlay category and ChatGPT’s early launch show that competition for the in-car voice AI slot is already taking shape.
