Anthropic said in a post on its science blog that astrophysicist Brice Ménard used Claude Science to create what it described as the first complete ultraviolet map of the sky. According to the company, astronomers had already assembled full-sky maps across wavelengths ranging from radio to gamma rays, but large portions of the sky had never been observed in ultraviolet. Ménard directed Claude to locate existing datasets, combine them, and use statistical inference to fill in the missing areas. Anthropic said the task would have taken weeks if done by humans alone, but was completed in a matter of days with Claude, while Ménard was able to work on other projects at the same time. The resulting map, Anthropic said, serves as a useful teaching tool and offers an example of how AI can make lower-priority but time-intensive scientific work practical.

Techub News reported that Anthropic, in a post on its science blog, said astrophysicist Brice Ménard used Claude Science to create the first complete ultraviolet map of the sky.

Filling a gap in ultraviolet observations

Anthropic said astronomers had already produced complete maps of the sky across wavelengths from radio to gamma rays. Large areas of the sky, however, had never been observed in ultraviolet.

In this project, Ménard directed Claude to find existing datasets, merge them, and use statistical inference to fill in the gaps.

From weeks to days

According to Anthropic, the work would have taken weeks if completed by humans, but with Claude it took only a few days. During that time, Ménard was also able to handle other projects.

Anthropic said the generated map is a useful teaching tool and also shows how AI can make scientific tasks feasible when they were previously too time-consuming or too low on the priority list to complete.
