Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has signed a multiyear partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Nasdaq-listed crypto company is now the exclusive cryptocurrency platform partner of the NBA, Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), NBA G League, NBA 2K League, and USA Basketball, according to an official announcement on Tuesday (October 19, 2021).

A Landmark Deal for Both Crypto and Basketball

The partnership marks the first cryptocurrency platform sponsorship for each of these leagues and organizations. Under the terms of the agreement, Coinbase will deliver “unique content, innovations, activations and experiences” to educate fans about the rapidly evolving cryptoeconomy. The NBA G League is the official minor league of the NBA, while the NBA 2K League is a joint venture between the NBA and video game publisher Take-Two Interactive. USA Basketball is the national governing body for men’s and women’s basketball in the United States and represents the country in FIBA and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Brand Presence Across Major Broadcasts

Starting with the tip-off of the NBA’s 75th anniversary season, Coinbase will have brand presence featured during nationally televised games. The exchange further becomes the presenting partner of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup and the USA Basketball men’s and women’s national team exhibition tours, as well as a partner of NBA G League Ignite, a developmental team for elite prospects.

Kerry Tatlock, NBA Senior Vice President of Global Marketing Partnerships and Media, commented: “We look forward to collaborating with Coinbase to provide fans with new ways to engage with the league and each other, while also enhancing the experience for fans who are already Coinbase users.”

Strategic Significance for the Crypto Industry

This deal represents one of the most high-profile integrations of a cryptocurrency platform into mainstream American sports. Coinbase, founded in 2012 and listed on Nasdaq in April 2021 through a direct listing, is the first U.S. crypto exchange to go public. The NBA commands a global audience of hundreds of millions, making this partnership a powerful vehicle for mainstream adoption of digital assets. By aligning with iconic property names like the NBA and WNBA, Coinbase gains unparalleled exposure to a diverse and engaged fan base, while the leagues introduce their audiences to the possibilities of cryptocurrencies.

The partnership also signals a growing trend of crypto companies entering sports sponsorships. In recent months, other exchanges and blockchain firms have inked deals with teams, stadiums, and leagues worldwide. Coinbase’s agreement with the NBA is widely regarded as a milestone in the institutional acceptance of cryptocurrencies.
